On the Wednesday evening of March 12th, I had the great fortune of attending an event hosted by Third Coast Audio at the Hull House. It was an evening dedicated to the sharing of migration stories, and what a perfect location to do so!
For those of you unfamiliar with the Hull House, allow me to enlighten you. The Hull House was founded by Jane Addams, a social reformer, in 1889. She was very passionate about issues of immigration during her time. She opened the Hull House to meet the needs of a neighborhood populated primarily with new immigrants trying to make a new life in America. The Hull House served as a cultural center, a save haven, and a place for support. Today the Hull House is open to the public as a museum, and is located on the UIC campus.

The Third Coast Audio event held at the Hull House was titled, Migration Stories: All Roads Lead to Chicago. The evening was an exploration of what migration means. One of the opening remarks emphasized how migration is a promise of uncertainty, competing values, pressures to assimilate, and a desire to put down roots. The audience for the event gathered in the Dining Hall at the Hull House, and got to hear Dr. Timuel Black share his migration stories.

A listening event came after Dr. Timuel Black spoke. Clips taken by StoryCorps were shared with the audience. The links below are a selection of the stories shared with us:
